Waves for Hope’s teachings are based on the Self-determination theory, which suggests that people are motivated to grow and change by three innate and universal psychological needs.
Gaining mastery over challenging situations and having new experiences are essential for developing a cohesive sense of self. Surfing offers the perfect playground to experience and practice both.
People need to experience a sense of belonging and connection to other people. Surfing has an inclusive character, enabling social interactions and positive friendships.
People need to feel in control of their own behaviors and goals. This sense of being able to take direct action will result in real change and plays a major part in helping people feel self-determined.
"I learned how to control my temper by
taking deep breaths and doing a Take Five."
Research suggests that these basic psychological needs are universal and not depending on culture, social background etc.
In psychology, self-determination is an important concept that refers to each individual's ability to make choices and be in control of their own life. This plays an important role in psychological health and well-being.
With our surf therapy program, we aim at fusing the fun activity of surfing with the achievement of these 3 basic psychological needs.
The surf therapy program was developed for youths growing up in underserved and disadvantaged communities, where opportunities are scarce.
Our program is accessible to anyone between the ages of 9 and 25 in the communities on the east coast of Trinidad. We also offer private surf therapy sessions for individuals or as team building events.
